After our trip to Spain, my partner was in love with muesli.. let’s not discuss the many different kinds he tried and how many overpriced boxes of muesli he purchased when we got home. So it was a must that I learn how to make it when we came back from vacation. Little to my surprise, it really involves no work. You just buy some very basic ingredients (grains, nuts/seeds, fried fruit), stick it in a container, and you’ve got an easy and nutritious breakfast!
What makes muesli different than granola? There’s no cooking required plus it doesn’t involve adding oil or sweetener like granola. So why not make muesli instead of granola – no cooking and no added stuff!
Of note: I’m still a granola person. I like the crunch that the extra time and baking adds to it.. I’l forever have my boring, daily breakfast of frozen cherries, yogurt and granola in my little mason jar. But with muesli being such a staple in our home, I just had to share it with all of you!
My go-to proportions:
- 4 parts grains – ex: rolled oats, rolled barley, quinoa, millet
- 1 part nuts/seeds – ex: sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, anyyy nuts
- 1 part dried fruit – ex: mango, papaya, bananas, raisins, cranberries, apricots
And that’s it! The combinations are ENDLESS! Seems funny sticking a recipe on here but below is my partner’s fav combination of ingredients.
- 3 cups (750 mL) quick oats
- 1 cup (250 mL) rolled oats OR rolled barley
- 1/4 cup (60 mL) pumpkin seeds
- 1/4 cup (60 mL) sunflower seeds
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) mixed nuts
- 1 cup (250 mL) dried fruit (equal mix of dried mangos, papaya, banana and apricot)
What to do:
- Add all ingredients to an air tight container. Mix well.
- BAM! Muesli! Add on top of your favourite yogurt or with milk/mylk.
